Sandvika seaside
A new district where fjord and city meet
Feasibility study for Sandvika making the seafront accessible to all as an urban marina, where the city centre is opened to the water and the motorway E18 is moved underground.
The design of Sandvika seafront is based on the urban development concept of the urban marina: a new type of district that is experienced as a continuation of Sandvika city centre into the fjord. As the fjord seeps into the quarters together with the landscape, a destination is created for the Sandvika area that complements the current commercial core. Arrangements are being made for a new marina with functions associated with different uses of the fjord.
A future seafront
Bærum municipality has conducted a process with parallel assignments for Sandvika seafront that affects private stakeholders, landowners, and businesses along the fjord. On behalf of Lakseberget Båtforening, which owns large parts of the development area, LINK Arkitektur has prepared a city vision for the area and explored alternative visions for a future seafront around Sandviksbukta where the navy's operations to a greater extent define the new district's identity and programming. As the E18 is lowered below ground level on the Western Corridor through Bærum, this will free up sections with large transformation areas along the Oslo Fjord. The barrier effect that E18 has today in front of Sandvika centre will be able to be removed and contact with the fjord strengthened.
Social activities in the district
The new district is actively programmed with a number of activities related to the city and the sea, such as city beach, kayak rental, boat hotel, cafes, guest harbour, and promenades on the pier. The active programming around the seafront is an important part of the development of Sandvika's identity as the city by the fjord and the idea of a marina as an active part of this cityscape. The visual connection between the centre of Sandvika and the larger fjord landscape is maintained by the fact that Sandviken - the bay with sand is the core room in the harbour that opens on Fornebulandet with a ferry shuttle over. The new district will have a high street, a new modern seafront, as well as canal systems that ensure circulation in the water connecting the areas. New urban spaces are formed with industry, housing, marinas, and parks.
