Citybanan, station City
A 6 km railway tunnel beneath the centre of Stockholm
Track capacity through central Stockholm is being doubled with the six kilometre length of the Citybanan commuter train tunnel. And we designed Citybanan’s City Station.
With a technically complex design engineering process, and a large client organisation, Citybanan is one of Sweden’s largest ever infrastructure projects. We designed a modern and aesthetically appealing station environment with high demands for precision, material use and design.
The new station is beneath T-Centralen, and the platforms are located in two parallel rock tunnels which are 255 m long, 25 m wide and 40 m below ground.
An international capital
The aim was for travellers to clearly feel that they had arrived at an international capital. The station must feel like a modern, international environment reminiscent of an airport. Keywords were welcoming, secure and eventful.
Travellers arrive at City Station via a glazed stairwell, lifts and bright connecting walkways. We used customised lighting, light colours and art to create environments with high architectonic quality, which diminishes the feeling of being underground. Here are also shops, seating areas and natural meeting places.
LINK Arkitektur, with CF Möller as sub-consultant, were design architects for Citybanan’s City Station. Ahlqvist & Almqvist architects drew up the system documentation.
