Varmen Fire Station

Melting into the landscape

With an urban park on the roof and the harbor as the nearest neighbour, Varmen fire station in Stavanger challenges the ideas about what a fire station should look like.

We have developed a concept that aims for the fire station to become a signature building seen from the city side, but at the same time, an urban park that stands out between the building bodies. The park should be a multifunctional area for free play and a dynamic experience. This is an open and informal space that invites many different activities, where only the imagination sets the limits.

The fire station is a park and fire station in one. The building is located in a relatively newly established residential and recreational area near Lervig Park and a new harbour promenade along the fjord. The idea behind the project is that the firefighters will get the best possible fire station while ensuring that residents in the area and the town itself are able to enjoy the best and largest possible park area. At least 50% of the roof is public parkland.
