A harbour area transforms into an attractive and vibrant district
At Skeppsbron in Gothenburg, we are carrying out a placemaking pilot project for ground floor living and street spaces. The project will set the standard for the development throughout Älvstaden.
Älvstaden is the Nordic region's largest project for urban development. Large port areas will be transformed into attractive districts. In the central area of Skeppsbron, we have combined our expertise in urbanism, placemaking, and interior architecture to create attractive ground floor living and street spaces where the boundaries between inside and outside are blurred.
The human scale
The success factor lies in planning based on the urban space, from the bottom up and inside and out, and focusing on the human scale in preference to an overall plan. To uphold the vitality of the area, the municipality has chosen to maintain ownership of the street spaces and ground floors and sell the building plots upwards from level two.
Active facades and good connections between indoor and outdoor activities are crucial factors in creating an attractive area on Skeppsbron.
