Skandionkliniken

The first cancer clinic for proton beam therapy in the Nordic region

A secure, high-technology activity together with a hotel and restaurant – all contained in the flagship building at Uppsala University Hospital.

The Skandion Clinic, the first cancer clinic for proton beam therapy in the Nordic region, is located in Uppsala. A patient hotel with 86 double rooms has been constructed adjacent to the clinic. Together with Akademiska Hus, seven county councils are behind this unique collaborative project. In 2007, LINK won a parallel assignment with a suggestion maximising use of the plot’s constructible area, and Uppsala received a new flagship building housing secure high-technology. The clinic opened in 2015 and will treat around 1000 patients a year.

A pleasant, effective and caring environment

We faced an exciting architectonic challenge in welding together all of the complex construction requirements and functions: highly advanced radiation therapy, preparation rooms, offices, a conference room, a hotel and restaurant. Together they are designed to create a pleasant, effective and caring environment for patients, employees and visitors alike.

Our winning proposal presented a plan with an effective process flow. We gave the clinic a coordinated style and a clear identity. At the same time there was a desire to create an indoor environment that didn’t feel like a hospital. This inspired us to work as far as possible with natural materials. Light-coloured walls and stained ribbed wooden panels contrast with a brightly coloured palette. Together with plenty of natural light and daylight simulation, the colours have an energising effect on both patients and employees.

The building won the 2015 PLÅT Prize and was nominated as 2015 Construction of the Year as well as receiving a Special Mention in the Architizer A+ Award.
