Transformation from old school buildings to modern apartments

Two old school buildings in Tidaholm were at risk of demolition after having stood abandoned for an extended period. LINK was tasked with assessing the potential for new use of the buildings. Could we preserve them and create space for new use rather than demolish them?

After an evaluation of their condition, it became clear that the buildings were well-suited for a transformation into apartments. In collaboration with the client, we established a distinct strategy with both environmentally and economically goals.

The buildings have been adapted for use, accessibility, and current building standards. Changes and upgrades have been made with great care to preserve as much as possible of the beautiful schools. The buildings hold a significant cultural and historical place in the local community. Their historical character has been preserved and integrated, opening new possibilities to meet modern needs.

An area in growth

The project comprises a total of 26 new apartments, mainly two- and three-room units. The apartments were sold before the project was completed, and the interest in the area has been significant. With this transformation project as a foundation for creating a vibrant community, plans are now in place to build more housing in the area. Preserving old buildings with important historical value and ties to a specific area is an investment in both the environment and cultural heritage, fostering pride among residents.

One of the most charming details we chose to preserve is the old stairs, worn down by hundreds of little feet running up and down since the school was built in the early 1900s
