Universities boost new outdoor areas

The Norwegian Veterinary College and the Veterinary Institute are located at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences at Ås. LINK landscape architects are responsible for the design of the outdoor spaces.

The joint location of the Norwegian Veterinary College and the University of Environmental and Life Sciences at Ås (UMB) provides a unique opportunity to develop an outstanding environment for education and research within Life Sciences in Norway. The educational institutions will be joined together in a large new university and research campus. The outdoor facility with greenery is about 200,000 m2. It has been a prerequisite to make the new facility an unaffected extension of the existing facility at UMB and its buildings and parks of high cultural-historical value. The new buildings have been added as part of a larger park, and in a position that meets the existing sight lines and reinforces new ones.

The project has great complexity, due to the relationship to the terrain and existing facilities, and because of prerequisites related to logistics and infection considerations. The facility is both a large farm, an advanced research laboratory and a vibrant campus with an active student environment. The project is the result of a tender competition with negotiation and organized as a design group.
