Brinkskolan

A safe school environment with the student and learning in focus

For 500 school and preschool age children, we have created an educational environment that promotes playfulness and creativity, makes room for spontaneous interaction and where every part stimulates learning.

Different types of educational environment

The project has been carried out with a focus on sustainability from ecological, social and economic perspectives. At the same time, children and staff played a leading role in the project. The underlying educational theory is learning from each other, which requires premises that support social interaction in different ways. The school offers a wide range of learning environments, from large to small, open to closed, lively to calm – so that each learning situation has an appropriate room.

Three volumes linked together

To give the large school building a scale where students feel secure, we have divided it into three volumes linked together by a central space. The core of our design idea was to clearly emphasise this relationship using contrast in the material choices, design language and function. The open, central room serves as the hub of the building and contains the main entrance, dining room, library and hall. The design means the school lacks closed corridors, in favour of transparency – a prerequisite for a secure school environment.

The project has received Miljöbyggnad Gold certification. In 2016, it was named as Urban Development of the Year by Täby Municipality.
