Västerås emergency hospital
Västmanland's new emergency hospital
In collaboration with Carlstedt Arkitekter, LINK has designed Region Västmanland's new emergency hospital in Västerås - the hospital that will secure the emergency healthcare services of the future.
Together with Region Västmanland, we will create safe environments for both patients and staff. The first phase of Västerås emergency hospital comprises a 75,000 m2 treatment building, an outpatient clinic building and a bed building with 180 beds. In addition, the hospital houses an emergency department with emergency X-ray, X-ray and IVA, as well as a neonatal intensive care unit, maternity ward, surgery/operation, infection clinic and general health services.
A sustainable and flexible hospital
Through optimized functions, we have designed a hospital which is both financially feasible with long-term sustainable solutions and which provides the best conditions for good health care. We have taken the patient's needs as our starting point, which means that the patient's needs always come first.
Treatment and outpatient clinic buildings have deep building volumes with window strips that maximize daylight. The two courtyards provide a good view of the green surroundings and optimize the entry of daylight. The bed building has a slightly narrower building volume and a window with a low parapet to enable a view from the patient bed.
Thoughtful orientation and efficient flow
Good flow and logistics have been very important in the planning of the new emergency hospital and efficient logistics are ensured by separating emergency and elective flow. A central main corridor connects the emergency and treatment building with the beds in the bed building. This contributes to easy orientation and a good overview. The compact buildings are designed to create efficient healthcare buildings.
With generality, flexibility and standardization, Region Västmanland is building a new emergency hospital to meet the needs of the future. Construction is planned to start in 2022 and in 2030 the hospital will be opened to staff, patients and visitors.
