Malmö city's first new upper secondary school in sixty years
For the first time in 60 years, Malmö City has built a new upper secondary school, choosing to invest in a solid, high-quality building that will stand the test of time. We at LINK Arkitektur are responsible for the interior architecture at Malmö Citadelsgymnasium and have placed great emphasis on a design that aligns with the building's expression, encouraging meeting spaces in various forms.
Nordic light and wood
The Nordic aesthetic inspires the interior design. Against a base of a calm colour scale with light wood, the environments have been given character and colours through pendant lighting and intense accent colours.
The concept is based on numerous gathering areas, including the dining room, café, and corridors. The most prominent gathering place is the dining room, which has a magnificent sea view and visual contact between the two floors. We have divided the room into different areas so that all students can find their designated space. Bar tables with high stools are mixed with classic long tables, café tables and sofas. The interior is also flexibly planned, allowing it to be easily converted into an auditorium for larger gatherings.
The social aspect of a high school is essential, and we worked with a concept that creates the conditions for informal meetings between both students and teachers. The school management was actively involved throughout the process, and we have also engaged student representatives to ensure they feel a sense of ownership and inclusion.
In addition to staff rooms, a café, a dining room and administrative premises, the school houses general teaching rooms as well as special rooms for physics, chemistry and technology.
The school has space for 1,200 students and a staff of 120. It is located in Citadel City, an area under development with newly built housing and a waterfront location that connects the city.
