Sjøbodene in Sandviken

Historical Atmosphere by Bergen’s Waterfront

The shoreline in Sandviken is undergoing a transformation, evolving from an industrial area into a residential neighborhood. The old boathouses in Bergen are tied to the city’s role as a trading hub dating back to the 1600s. These distinctive buildings served as storage spaces along the sea routes and stand today as important cultural landmarks for the city. The area's history has thus guided the design concept.

Bergen is known for its narrow alleyways (smau) and small glimpses between buildings—and this atmosphere is reflected when walking along Postvegen towards the boathouses. The physical and visual connection to the sea creates a sense of calm and balance.

A total of 77 apartments are planned, ranging from 38 to 164 square meters, spread across five buildings where residents will enjoy views of Byfjorden and close proximity to the water. The homes will have a modern expression while also being adapted to the protected and heritage buildings in the surrounding area. The architectural style is inspired by historical traditions, where the colorful boathouses stood both across and along the landscape.

To the Sound of Waves

Most of the outdoor areas will be publicly accessible, particularly the quay promenade, which is designed for recreation, swimming, and enjoying life by the sea. There is a smooth transition down to the water, with a gradual descent towards the sea, including a large “shrimp staircase” that invites activities and relaxation. Inside the courtyard, between the residential buildings, the spaces are more private, with defined private terraces and semi-private zones. Here, you can enjoy views of Elsesro Brygge and the Old Bergen Museum.

The homes are just a short walk or bike ride from Bergen city center, offering peaceful surroundings with the sea as your closest neighbor—while still being conveniently central.
