Nydalen river

Bathing area by Akerselva

Great meeting places in the heart of Nydalen where our landscape architects designed the existing outdoor areas. Incorporated benches, stairs, showers and pools, mainly cast in concrete, offers a perfect place to cool down for warm Oslo residents during summer.

A balance between preserving old elements and facilitating modern use, while safeguarding and re-establishing biological diversity and fauna was important in the project.

The job of opening up the river includes the development of the landscape by Akerselva, where the upper section of a 110-metre-long concrete wall and its side walls has been removed. Parts of the side wall construction have been reused by creating an amphitheatre with sitting areas. Water levels have also been raised to minimum heights by establishing steps and dams. Walking areas, new planting, new grass areas and seating options have been established on both sides of Akerselva. The plan takes universal design into account. In the lower part, an older bridge has been removed, and the river has been widened into a larger basin with waterfalls.
