New Hvidovre Hospital

New Hvidovre Hospital

A successful cooperation between LINK arkitektur and schmidt hammer lassen architects and their subcontractors has resulted in the winning of a competition for a prestigious building project in the Capital Region of Denmark: the design and building of the New Hvidovre Hospital, encompassing an extension to the Hospital as well as an overall plan. The competition was organised for Region Hovedstadens Kvalitetsfonds Byggeprojekt.

The new extension includes an emergency department, anobstetrical ward, a cardiological unit, a children's ward and a neonatalintensive care unit. The area occupied by these outpatient departments and wards measure a total of 30,500 square metres. The project also includes an overall plan for a future extension of 100,000 square metres.

The main idea of the project takes its point of departure in the existing Hvidovre Hospital and adds to this the overall logistics and the concept of a functionally divided whole. A new main entrance plays quite apivotal role in the project as it is going to connect all existing functions and logistics in a logical way while providing everybody with a central entry to the hospital at the same time. The main focus of the project is a structural flexibility that allows for the hospital's future development. The modularity and flexible division of functions provide the sustainable basis that facilitates future extensions or redispositions.

An inner room, like a courtyard area, has been established for personnel and common functions, while the patients' wards are located in the exterior part of the building with windows to the outside and lots of light. The structure of the architects' proposal ensures an almost transparent openness between the various wards and departments, providing both patients and personnel with short walking distances.
